FIC: Interruptions
Nov. 15th, 2004 07:24 pmThank you to everyone for all the nice things they said about my fic. :D :D I appreciate it in approximately ten million ways. I wrote something else very early yesterday morning, because this style of writing has kind of killed my years of writers block, and figured I may as well post, because pointless fluff gives me the squee, and I love to share the squee with others.
Title: Interruptions
Rating: PG-15. Language. Mild affection -- nothing worth video taping,
pirosho, but that's just what I think. ;)
Summary: Stephen obliges Ed with a thinly-veiled innuendo, and Rob goes streaking through the corridors, except by streaking, I mean rolling through the hall on Jon's swivel chair.
Note: Oh em gee, I added het! I don't know where the as-of-yet one-sided Ed/Samantha thing came from. Ed needed stage business beyond grinning at Stephen. (And Samantha is also terribly cute. <3)
Disclaimer: Any similarity between the fictional version of the person portrayed here and the actual person is purely coincidental. This is a work of fiction. This is not an attempt to defame the character of said person on the basis of libel, as the work is FICTIONAL (and NOT an intently false statement created with the express purpose of misleading others about the actual character of said person).
Stephen is straightening his tie when he leaves Jon's office. It's a blue one, very plain and simple but nice all the same, and it brings a smile to Stephen's face, if only because he's thinking about how funny it would be if he had taken Jon's tie instead. He doesn't think anyone would notice the difference, except to say to Jon that the blue really matched his eyes. Stephen likes blue, especially the blue in Jon's eyes. So Stephen particularly likes this tie.
'Get a lot done?' is what Ed asks, as Stephen has shit for luck and runs into Ed whenever he doesn't really want to. However, this time Ed is talking to Samantha, and Stephen is fond of Samantha -- she kind of takes the edge off of Ed. So Stephen smiles at her, but just eyes Ed warily.
'Just thought I'd ask,' Ed adds, feigning innocence. Stephen knows Ed is feigning, because Ed is always doing that when he's asking Stephen these kinds of questions -- and because Samantha is looking very innocent, and it's always good to have a basis for comparison.
'We did,' Stephen replies eventually. 'Sort of. Talked some things over. Ran a couple of ideas for This Week in God by him.'
'And?' Ed is waiting for a joke. Samantha is looking interested, because Samantha likes to know about things.
Stephen is very happy to oblige Ed. 'He was very receptive.' Stephen also wonders if Samantha would like to know about what makes his joke funny. He decides that she would, because she's very supportive like that. But if Ed hasn't mentioned it -- and Ed would mention it, because he's aware of how much Samantha likes to know things and would surely take advantage of it -- then Stephen decides that he won't ruin Ed's fun. Stephen is very sympathetic to people in Ed's situation, because Stephen was in it once, too.
Samantha smiles, looking pleased for Stephen's sake. Ed's grin broadens. 'Exciting stuff. Can't wait to see it.'
Jon, of course, comes out of his office now, running a hand through his hair and looking a bit tired. Secretly Stephen is very proud of this. Jon first seems bewildered by the fact that Stephen is still standing there -- not because he's displeased, Stephen can tell, but because usually if Stephen has something else he wants, he comes back in, and if he doesn't, then he finds something else to do. But then Jon sees Ed and Samantha, and seems relieved that something hasn't happened to Stephen in the few moments since he left the office. 'Did I miss something, then?'
Ed is still feigning innocense. The difference is that now he's failing miserably. 'Stephen was telling us about the stuff he just pitched to you.'
Jon blinks and looks at Stephen, not as aware of the nuances and implications of Ed's grins as Stephen is. Stephen smiles broadly. Samantha looks confused.
'Holy fuck!' Rob interrupts.
Rob interrupts by careening down the hallway in a chair everyone seems to recognize as Jon's achordesk chair, and as he goes flying past with an absurd grin on his face, four heads turn to watch him go.
'Holy fuck,' Samantha repeats, except she begins chasing after Rob to make sure he doesn't hurt himself on the swivel chair again.
'Holy fuck,' Stephen repeats, except he steps back towards the door of Jon's office on the pretense of getting away from Rob.
'Holy fuck,' Ed repeats, except he's grinning his 'knowing' grin at Jon and Stephen, and Stephen is aware that Jon is rolling his eyes.
'Holy fuck,' Jon repeats, except he's standing still, because he knows that Stephen much prefers the view when Jon is in front.
'Holy fuck!' Ben repeats, except that Ben is at the end of the hallway, and from the sound of the crash, so is Rob, and from the shriek, so is Samantha. And when Samantha shrieks, Ed suddenly looks quite concerned, and runs down the hall to see what's happened.
Stephen grins his 'knowing' grin after Ed. Fuck Ed's grin! Stephen's is better. Jon smiles, too, and coos, 'How cute.'
'Quite cute,' Stephen agrees, except he isn't looking down the hall anymore, because Jon is still in front of him.
Jon smiles again, but at Stephen this time. And Jon turns back towards the door of his office, leaning close to Stephen without any pretense, but just because he likes to. Jon's smile persists -- and Stephen idly muses that he likes it more when Jon smiles at him than when he grins at him, especially that cute thin-lipped, chubby-cheeked smile that he has sometimes, because the smile is so sweet -- and he leans up to put his lips against Stephen's ear while reaching behind to check that the door's locked. (Stephen thinks this is silly, but Jon maintains that the interns snoop around where they shouldn't.)
'We should go check on them,' he suggests.
'Everyone's distracted now,' Stephen retorts, and he goes to lean back against the door to trap Jon's hands so maybe they'll unlock it again.
Jon quickly peeks down the hall to make sure that no one else is running after Rob yet, and nibbles on Stephen's earlobe. 'Ed will notice, unless he's too busy trying to decide if breaking a few bones with a swivel chair is worth having Samantha run after him, too. Or Rob will notice, because he'll hate it that everyone wasn't there. Or Samantha will notice because we're being a bit rude, not going to check up on him.'
Stephen makes a face. It's supposed to be an irritated one, but it's hard to be irritated with Jon so close. But Jon is right, and so Stephen tilts his head and brushes a kiss along the gravitas along Jon's temple, and Jon smiles and backs away (reluctantly, Stephen is very pleased to note) and begins jogging down the hallway.
Stephen briefly wonders why Jon doesn't wait for him, but then, while watching Jon going down the hall, realizes that Jon just has Stephen's best interests at heart. Feeling very pleased about the fact that Jon is aware of Stephen's interests, Stephen decides that he can wait a little while, and heads down the hallway to point and laugh at Rob on the pretense of mockery, when really, it's just that Stephen kind of likes when Jon crinkles his nose in irritation because Stephen's being a little harsh. And if Ed shoots him another one of those grins, then Stephen will quirk an eyebrow at Samantha's crinkled nose, and that eyebrow will say, 'fuck you, Ed's grin'.
And Stephen will be pleased.
